Support Unit

The Banyalla Supported Learning Centre at Kiama High School draws its name and inspiration from the native Banyalla tree, a resilient understorey species known for thriving in the challenging conditions of the Australian rainforest.

Much like the tree, the centre represents strength, adaptability, and quiet endurance, providing a nurturing environment where students with complex needs are supported to grow at their own pace. Banyalla's role in offering shelter and protection within the forest reflects the centre's commitment to creating a safe, inclusive space where students feel seen, valued and supported.

With roots in Aboriginal language and culture, the name also honours connection to Country, identity and belongong - fundamental elements of the centre's trauma-informed, culturally aware, and student-centred approach to education.
