R & R

The aim of the R&R (Read and Relax) program is to increase the rate of reading for pleasure for year 7 and 8 students at Kiama High School. Research tells us that reading a book of their choice for pleasure is one of the most impactful ways to increase success at school across all subject areas. It has been shown to relieve stress, have positive impacts on mental health and develop students' empathy for others. R&R intends to improve reading outcomes for Year 7 and 8 students as highlighted in the KHS Strategic Plan.

Each term, all year 7 and 8 students will sit a reading test to establish an accurate reading level. Using this data, students will then spend some time with a school librarian to assist them in choosing a suitable novel that is of interest to them. This book will become their R&R book and will need to come to school with them everyday.

Students will be regularly participating in R&R reading time within their English classes but the program will also be utilised by staff across all subject areas. Reading R&R books for pleasure will become a regular part of the day for all year 7 students.
