Kiama High School attendance procedures

If a student is absent from school for the whole day, parents/carers are required to phone the absence line, submit an absence via the enews app before 8.55 am or reply to the absence SMS. Parents/carers need to state the reason for the absence so it can be documented. Parents/Carers are asked to supply documentation where necessary.

If a student is late to school, they need to supply a written note stating why they were late. If this was due to an appointment, please supply an appointment card or doctor’s certificate. An unjustified late arrival will generate an SMS to the parents. 3 unjustified late arrivals to school will incur a Monday Afternoon Detention.

If a student needs to leave early, they must report to the front office with a note from thier parent or carer explaining why they are leaving early.before the morning roll call bell to receive an early leaver slip. They must then return at the requested leave time to the office and sign out. This will allow the school to account for the student for the rest of the day on class rolls.

If a student is present at school and has been marked absent for a period on a class roll, an SMS is generated to the parents/carers. The student is then required to see the Head Teacher of Attendance Mr Yates before roll call the next school day to explain the absence. If a student is deemed truant from class, they will incur a Monday Afternoon Detention. You will be notified of the detention via an email.

Extended Leave for Students

If families are planning a holiday and travel during a school term there are procedures to follow to comply with the DOE attandance regulations. if a student is going to be away for 5 or more consecutive days an Extended Leave Application must be submitted to the Principal. The form can be collected from the administration office or may be accessed through the School's website. The form can be found at the bottom of the page under the "Forms" section.

Once the form is returned to the office, the Principal will consider the leave request. The student will be notified of the decision and provided with the documentation regarding the leave request. A Certificate of Extrended Leave - Travel will be supplied to the student if leave has been approved. Following the extended leave procedures will ensure that your child's attendance will be marked as "Justified".

Attendance and absences

Students must attend school regularly so they can achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options.

In NSW, all children from the age of 6 are legally required to attend school or be registered for home schooling through the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). All students must complete Year 10, or its equivalent.
